Next Steps After Completing The DMV Dealer Education Program

After completing the DMV dealer education program, it is important to decide if you will pursue a used car retail dealer license or wholesale only dealer license.

Below are your immediate action items before submitting your DMV occupational license application.

  1. Make Appointment or drop in to a DMV Inspector Office and take the Dealer Exam
    • The cost is $16 and students must pass with at least 70% or better
      • If you fail you will have to wait 7 days before taking the exam again, you will be charged $16 each time the test is taken

2.After successfully passing, the DMV inspector will return your certificate of completion to you, make sure you add it to your occupational licensing application.

3.Now it’s time to get your occupational license application and supplemental documents in order before submitting to DMV. To ensure your application is complete and accurate, please reference the DMV Application Checklist.

4.If you chose to pursue a retail license, you will need to set up and appointment with the DMV occupational licensing inspector to review your completed documents and issue a temporary dealer license.

  • The inspector will set up a time to see your retail location for the visual inspection

For those who will obtain a wholesale only license

  • You may mail your application to DMV or submit in person to your local DMV inspection office listed above
