New DMV Online Portal for Used Car Dealers

If you are interested in applying for a used car dealer license (Occupational License)  in California, then you are in for some good news. The California DMV is modernizing its systems to make it easier for you to use its services. This includes a new DMV online portal that will allow you to schedule site inspections as a part of the application for an original license or program certifications.

Scheduling Inspections Online

In order to schedule your on-site inspection, you will have to set up an account with the California DMV online and schedule your inspection. Since this is a completely new program, you will likely have a number of questions on how this all works. Below, we have taken the latest information from the California DMV and put together this handy FAQ to help you understand the new online scheduling process.

How to schedule an inspection online

First, you will have to submit your paper application to a California DMV location. Be sure to reach out to a licensed DMV educator and ensure your application is complete & accurate. After your application has been accepted, you will receive an email link to the new online portal. From there, set up your account with the DMV. After you have set up your account, you will be able to schedule your site inspection. Instead of scheduling a specific time, you will be able to schedule a time window when the inspection takes place. Once your site inspection has been set up, an inspector will contact you and let you know the specific time of the inspection.

Who will this affect?

The new online portal will affect anyone who applies or manages Occupational Licenses. This includes Dealers, Salespersons, and Dismantlers. If you are unsure whether or not you will need a license, contact a staff member at the DMV.

Do you need to submit my application online?

No. You will have to submit your application to a DMV office. After you have submitted the application, you will receive an email with a link to set up your online account.

Do I have to go to a specific DMV office to submit my application?

You can submit your application at any DMV office. It doesn’t have to be the DMV office that is closest to you.

Should I schedule my appointment when submitting my application at a DMV office?

You don’t have to schedule an appointment when submitting your application. However, it is highly recommended that you schedule an appointment in order to save time.

Do you need to set up an account online?

Yes. With the new initiative, anyone who applies for an Occupational License (OL) will need to set up an online account. Your link to set up the account will arrive by email.

How to set up my user account

Once you have received your email with the link, you will be walked through the process. The DMV has provided a helpful video to guide you through the process. If you need further assistance, you will be provided with contact information where a DMV staff member can walk you through the process.

New information that will be required

In order to set up your online account, you will need to provide the following information:

  • Full name
  • Phone number
  • Email address

After you have entered this information, then you will need to provide the following information which will be provided in the email:

  • Application number
  • Account ID

Is there a fee to set up an account?

No. You do not have to pay a fee to set up your online account.

Is it possible to call for an appointment or simply drop into a DMV office?

No. The only way that you can schedule your inspection is through the online portal. If you have trouble with setting up the appointment through the portal, you can use the help video to assist you. Additionally, you can always contact the DMV and have a staff member walk you through the process.

Does this work with a mobile device?

Yes. You will be able to use your mobile device (Android and iOS) to access and use the DMV’s new online portal.

What are the benefits of this service?

Besides setting up your appointment for an onsite inspection, there are a number of other benefits to using the online portal:

  • You can apply, renew or modify your license
  • Make online payments
  • Receive notifications about the status of applications and renewals

Finally, the biggest benefit is that this online portal will reduce the amount of paperwork and allow you to do business with the DMV without having to visit an office.

When should the account be set up?

The account should be set up as soon as possible since the DMV will only allow many services to be completed online. The online portal has been operational since February 28, 2022. Therefore, if you are looking to apply for an OL, you should apply in person at a DMV office and then set up your online account when your follow-up email arrives.

Will these changes impact those with an occupational license?

If you already have an OL, then you will not be impacted by the changes.

I still have some questions. Who should I contact?

If you still have any more questions about the new DMV online portal, then you can send your questions to [email protected]
